Blackmon to face Tuck in historic lt. gov.'s race
Blackmon to face Tuck in historic lt. gov.'s race

* Contest to be 1st between women for state office

By Julie Goodman

Mississippi is about to witness its first statewide race between female candidates — incumbent Amy Tuck and Tuesday's Democratic primary winner, Barbara Blackmon — with solid backing for the lieutenant governor's post.

If she defeats Tuck, the Republican nominee, Blackmon — a three-term state senator — also would become the first African American elected to statewide office since the 19th century.

With 87 percent of precincts reporting, Blackmon had received 231,055 votes, or 53 percent, and Jim Roberts had received 164,164 votes, or 38 percent. Greenwood businessman Troy Brown had 41,536 votes, or 9 percent of the vote.

"The results show what we've been saying all along, that we have broad-based support from across the state," Blackmon, of Canton, said while a jazz trio played and a crowd of supporters cheered at her downtown Jackson campaign headquarters on Lamar Street.

1. I'll proudly vote for Ms. Blackmon this fall.
I hope we can make history! Amy Tuck should be running her campaign from prison.

2. If anyone can beat Amy Tuck, Barbara Blackmon (MY STATE SENATOR)...
can.

Amy "Party-switch" Tuck will have all the money in the world thanks to Trent but some of the Rethugs here consider her a RINO. Dems despise her for switching parties and costing us a congressional seat (Ronnie Shows D-4th District). I really think Blackmon has a chance. If you have any spare cash please consider....
