"Throughout its history, in times of war and in times of peace alike, America has turned to generals and other military men to serve as their president. Some, like George Washington and Dwight D. Eisenhower, turned out to be excellent in the job. Others -- Ulysses S. Grant, William Henry Harrison, Andrew Johnson -- are considered by most historians to have been miserable failures. In and of itself, therefore, being a general certainly does not guarantee that one will make a good president.

"Gen. Clark's Order: 'Crank It Up' Retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark
appears to be getting close to throwing his stars into the 2004
Democratic presidential nominating contest. Clark recently phoned one
close adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity, and said, "Crank
it up." The Clark adviser said that the former NATO chief is smart to
stay out of the race until after Labor Day, but not much longer after
that. He pointed to the number of debates and forums that the
Democratic hopefuls have on tap and the chance that these encounters
will do little to clarify the race. . ."
