Where was Clinton in the Polls in Augist, 1991:

“ There is a lot of enthusiasm for Governor Dean, but beyond that some of the people (in the field) are at the same level that Bill Clinton was at in August of 1991 — 2 percent,” Shumaker said. “ People may be undecided because they haven’t focused on it.”

4. Pretty Low. Mario was who everyone was talking abt.

From what I've read, pretty much the only person any polito was focusing on was Mario Cuomo -- right through December, when it looked as though he was abt to jump in. Apparently, according to some old articles, there were even leaks to the press that it was a go. Then Mario stood up there and announced he wouldn't run -- that's when Clinton got his break, b/c before then nobody was talking abt him.

Because, I had no idea who Clinton was until *after* he won the presidency. I knew about Reagan and Bush and Perot. I convinced my dad to vote for Perot (he voted for Reagan and Bush, before). I had never even heard the name Clinton.

9. I remember Paul Tsongas did well at first.

I think he won New Hampshire, and then Clinton just out campaigned him. Politically, Tsongas and Clinton were pretty similar, both pro-business social liberals, but Clinton was the consumate campaigner.

Political junkies knew who Clinton was in 1991, because he was the keynote speaker at the Democratic convention in 1988. There had been a low buzz about him for years by 1991; in particular, journalists loved him, and couldn't stop talking about him among themselves. He didn't really come out of nowhere, as I recall.
