California Republican Bill Simon drops out of Davis recall race

ASSOCIATED PRESS
9:40 a.m., August 23, 2003

LOS ANGELES – Republican Bill Simon dropped out of the gubernatorial recall race Saturday amid calls from party leaders to consolidate support behind fewer candidates, a campaign official said.

Simon campaign spokesman K.B. Forbes confirmed that the Republican, who lost to Gov. Gray Davis in the 2002 race for governor, was dropping his bid to replace Davis if voters decide to oust the governor.

Forbes said Simon planned to release a statement Saturday saying: "I strongly believe that the desire of Californians must come before the aspirations of any single candidate. There are too many Republicans in this race, and the people of this state simply cannot risk a continuation of the Gray Davis legacy."

Forbes denied that Simon's move came in response to any pressure from the party.

3. ^ Now that's funny!
:)

I'm still waiting for the appropriate moment to use, "We must give da people a-yah" from Total Recall.

2. Not good.
Now all the right wingers will unite solidly behind McClintock.

8. I agree; this could be bad.
McClintock only needs 20% to be the frontrunner. And unlike Arnold, he is uberconservative.

11. 20% won't be frontrunner
I don't think that McClintock can win. Bustamante and Schwarzenneger are already ahead of 20%. The problem will be if McClintock drops out and all his votes and Simon's will go to Arnold. Hopefully, the democrats will unite around Bustamante and won't back Huffington or Arnold.

6. Partyline, that is a very good question!
I expect that ballot to be a mess!

Thanks.

10. I think so
I think that it is too late to take his name off the ballot. I believe once the filing deadline past the ballots were going to include all 135 candidates.

5. Funny.
My local paper had an article this morning kicking off his campaign tour; slogan, "I told you so." When I got done laughing, my response was, "No, we told you so."

McCintock will still in for now -- Uberoth might drop out too pretty soon.

13. If Ueberroth drops,
it's bad for Dems, about as bad as Simons. Ueberroth doesn't have the same amount of support, but his supporters will go straight to Arnold, almost in a bloc, as opposed to Simon's, who will split among the wingers.

9. What utter and complete bullshit!
"...There are too many Republicans in this race, and the people of this state simply cannot risk a continuation of the Gray Davis legacy."

The number of Pugs in the race has no bearing whatsoever on the 1st question: Shall Davis be recalled.

Idiot.

12. Sign of Republican Weakness, Not Strength
I don't think this development helps the Republicans one bit.
