Dean on Bush
Posted 10/16/2003 11:40 PM

At his meeting with reporters from USA TODAY and Gannett News Service, Howard Dean fired a string of zingers at President Bush:

• "His view of life starts at about $250,000 a year and goes up."

• "I think the president's philosophy is that if you're rich, you deserve it, and if you're poor, you deserve it."

<snip>

• We are "never going to be able to regain the credibility the United States had as a moral beacon in the world as long as this man is in the White House."

more, but not much more...

2. It's the one-liners stupid
Part of Dean's appeal is that he uses language that goes straight to the point. There are millions of voters who don't want to spend time and attention deciphering a candidate's positions. Democrats have needed to learn and use the "art" of the soundbyte for a very long time.
I had a conversation the other day about how our analyses and intelligence was often our biggest handicap when displayed. People resent an overly nuanced message sometimes. Is it possible that it is something we should respect?
My dad once told me that an old judge told him that "truly" intelligent people use words that are easily understood by everyone. Maybe so. Just as we find it appropriate to not use words that offend people, it might be appropriate to try to use words\phrases that are most likely to have a common meaning for as many people as possible.
The advantage to having all of these candidates is we are able to sift through a lot of political assets. I see some great things emerging that can be applied to any campaign. I really wish that rather than infighting, these guys would run a healthy competition, and let the victor take on the assets of the contenders.

3. Dean also said in the USA Today interview
That the big budget deficits Bush and company are running up fit perfectly into the GOP agenda...Scial Scurity and Medicare get squeeezed. Not to mention programs like Head Start. I'm so glad Governor Dean brought that up. Social programs such as these ARE in danger as a consequence of these massive deficits. And that point bears repeating over and over in the 2004 election.

Oh, btw. I'm new here. I discovered democraticunderground.com inadvertently. And, man I'm glad I did. :-)

6. Thanks for the welcome, guys.
I've been checking out democraticunderground.com. I love this site...especially the "Top 10 conservative idiots" weekly list (I think Ann Coulter should be in the "Conservative Idiots Hall of Fame).

I'm glad to meet you guys.
