Union to be out beating the Bushies (SEIU -- Dean)
More than 3,000 leaders and members of New York's powerful health care workers union, 1199/SEIU, held an unusual meeting in Baltimore this past weekend to lay plans for an unprecedented $35 million campaign to drive George W. Bush out of the White House next year.

The three-day, closed-door gathering was so hush-hush that even though former President Bill Clinton was the headline speaker and Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean attended, the conference received no media attention.

I posted this on GD, but stuff sinks fast there.

I thought it was interesting that they had this secret meeting, and Clinton and Dean were both there, and we didn't know! LOL.

In any case, this is great news for the Dems and esp. for Dean.

1. seiu and deanie
I'm a union guy with an ear to the ground. It's great to know organized labor is so adament about getting this "enemy of working people" out of the White House. We do a great job of turning out the rank and file.

As for SEIU and Dean, I and most fully expect the SEIU to endorse either Dean or no one. Although I'm a Gephardt suppporter (trade policy), I'll be the first to give Howard Dean some credit. He did some great things with nurses and their right to organize in his State while Governor. The heads of the SEIU understand this and many of them think he deserves their endorsement. That plus his health plan really appeal to Andy Stern and Dennis Rivera.

Although the over 1 million strong United Food and Commercial Workers endorsed Gephardt, the truth is that service unions have not been as negatively affected by unfair trade as Industrial unions, so that is why I think you might start seeing some Service unions go Dean's way. It's started with the Painters and may soon be SEIU. Just like Dick's record proves he deserves support from Industrial unions, I think Dean deserves some support from Service unions.

Working people all over this country can feel safe if either of these guys are our nominee.
