In NH Kerry says Bush broke promise to reduce emissions

DOVER — John Kerry wants New Hampshire voters to remember what George W. Bush told them four years ago.

While campaigning for the 2000 presidential election in the Granite State, Bush pledged to support a bill that would reduce the emissions of four major pollutants contributing to global warming, Kerry said.

"But President Bush broke that promise," Kerry said Monday in front of hundreds of University of New Hampshire students and environmental activists. Looking over those carrying placards that read, "Save our syrup," Kerry continued his blast against Bush: "He is the kind of politician who would cut down a tree and stand up on a stump that remains, give a speech on conservation."

In the 7News-Suffolk University poll released Monday, New Hampshire Democrats who said they would vote for Dean if the election were held today outnumbered Kerry supporters by 6 points — down from 9 points in September.

In addition, Kerry outscored Dean in personal popularity by 6 points in the same survey.

"I believe that never ever should young Americans in uniform be held hostage to America’s dependency on fossil fuel oil in the Middle East," Kerry said, drawing cheers from the crowd.

Kerry said the U.S. must develop alternative energy sources. He said he envisions 20 percent of electricity consumed in the country will be produced by alternative energy by 2020. Less dependency on oil will mean reducing the risk of terrorism, protecting the environment and stimulating the economy, he said.
