(Knight Ridder) Kerry Rebounding in the Polls

Once ordained the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, John Kerry is fighting for his political life in his own backyard.

New polls show the Massachusetts senator has started gaining on former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean in New Hampshire, the site of the nation's first primary in January and a critical test for the two men from neighboring states. Dean holds the lead, but he no longer has the commanding margin he built over the summer against a faltering Kerry campaign.

Kerry still has challenges, to be sure, notably explaining his Senate vote to authorize war in Iraq, a vote unpopular with many anti-war Democrats who've been drawn to Dean and his fervent anti-war message.

But Kerry has stopped his slide in the polls and is starting to win back some New Hampshire voters. Aides and analysts credit three reasons: He rolled out an earlier-than-expected endorsement from former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, is spending far more time in the state and is sharpening his often obtuse speaking style.

A lot could happen. As that day gets closer, people will start looking more closely at candidates actual records and positions. It's no suprise to me that Kerry is moving up.

I like all of his ideas. But there is something about him that doesn't appeal to people.

may I remind you that he won the popular vote, and he also won Florida. SCOTUS gave the election to Bush.

the general population realized what a right wing nut job Bush was going to be as pResident! Imagine the vote NOW for a "policy wonk".

Support your local "the real President"

Since when is Gore going to run again? I thought he was through - at least for 2004.

They both have amazing grasp of policy and great solutions to deal with the roots of the problems.

It's true that he's not a rock star at rallies like some candidates. It's true that he uses flowery, senatorial language in speeches (stuff that works much better in the written word).

But his slow, steady, behind the scenes work, not only educating himself on all of the complexities of things he hasn't been intimately associated with and his history of working in a bipartisan manner to get the facts we need to enact effective legislation...

The guys got it going, you know?

It should be remembered that that election was close enough to steal- therefore close enough for * to actually have won. WAY too close.
He doesn't relate to people who want a short clear cut snap shot of what he's about.

And Kerry in NH. That's why I think Edwards is still a viable candidate, Geppy is toast, and Kerry better hurry up and stop pacing himself. If Dean snags second in SC, it'll be huge. Helping to kill the "he can't attract southern voters" meme.

There was one poll which showed John Kerry down by six points and three others last week which showed him down by 13, 15, and 17-points.
Not that I don't think it will be closer than double digits in the end, but if your going to go by the polls released last week the 3/4 showed him down by double digits.

Zogby let the air out the "Happy, happy, joy, joy!" Kerry balloon in his latest NH poll. Read it and weep, guys... :shrug:
