CNN.com article on Camp Wellstone
Edited on Mon Oct-27-03 03:28 PM by kang
Family and former aides are putting on these affordable training seminars for future progressives. Pretty cool. Too bad I'm all the way out here in MA now. Thought people might be interested.

1. I went to one
It was the best 35 bucks I ever spent....a full weekend of excellent tips and strategies, designed to teach you how to become a better candidate/campaign worker/activist.

SpikeTrees was there too.

3. You can also help out Wellstone Action
at www.wellstone.org. They've been doing a ton of fundraising here in MN for the last few months. There was a number of musical events going on over the weekend, as Friday was the 1st anniversary of his death.

The Repubs have been doing this sort of thing since the 1980s, when they heavily recruited the religious right. If the Dems want to regain control of the government, we need to do the same with the folk who still believe in basic Democratic and progressive principles like:

* healthcare is a right, not a priviledge,
* a living wage for a full days work,
* fair trade for EVERYONE, not just corporations,
* an end to corporate welfare,
* a sane and rational foreign policy based on reality, not conjecture.

This is a big year for us, and it's ours to lose. "Unnamed Democrat" is still out-polling the Shrub in most polls. We can't afford to lose this one.

4. Big year is right
I went canvassing for the first time ever on Saturday morning and I have to say that it was a ton of fun. I look forward to being more active in the political process and learning more about how campaigns/movements work.

It really did break my heart when I heard the news about Sen. Wellstone. It was even worse how his memorial service became such a media "controversy." The man was a champion of justice. Pure and simple. A heck of a wrestler too I've heard too (College Hall of Fame). Let's keep this around just in case others haven't heard about the Wellstone Camp just yet.

5. He're a poem Natasha wrote for Wellstone a year ago
It was widely posted with permission to repost it along with the copyright information.

MARTYR FOR THE PEOPLE
By Natasha H (age 11)

When leaders wouldn’t lead
And the country was in need,
Wellstone chose to take a stand
Reaching out a helping hand.

With the wisdom of a Franklin,
The eloquence of Jefferson,
The courage of a Kennedy,
He fought for peace for you and me.

As heroic as Washington,
As honorable as Lincoln,
As inspiring as Patrick Henry,
He tried to keep us free.

And like our greatest heroes,
He stood strong against our foes;
With danger drawing near,
He refused to stop and fear.

Always putting his future last
In the votes he chose to cast,
The common people he did love
Like an angel from above

He put right high above might
And was martyred in his fight;
But for all he made us face,
The whole world’s a better place.
