In 2001, the AFL-CIO named the IUPAT the most effective political organization in the labor movement. Under President James A. Williams' visionary leadership, IUPAT members became known as the "Army of Black and Gold" as they proved themselves a force in grassroots organizing and voter mobilization throughout North America in their signature black and gold t-shirts. Their 140,000 members will now join the 478,000 Americans already working on behalf of Governor Dean across the country.
"My commitment to the right to organize has deep roots," Dean said. "As President I will vigorously enforce worker protections in federal law, work to undo the harsh anti-labor policies of the current Administration and make job creation a top priority."
As Governor of Vermont, Dean stood with nurses and other employees seeking to form unions, supported binding arbitration for municipal workers and signed into law agency fee protection for the state employees union, thereby providing union security for state employees. Prior to his service as Governor, he had a 100 percent pro-labor voting record as a state legislator. Dean was recently awarded the first Paul Wellstone Award by the AFL-CIO for his commitment to the rights of workers.
