Governor Dean's Statement on President Bush's Press Conference
Governor Dean's Statement on President Bush's Press Conference
DENVER -- Governor Dean issued this statement following President Bush's press conference today:

"Yesterday, the President claimed that the wave of attacks that left dozens dead and scores injured proved that the US was winning the peace in Iraq. At this point, nothing he says really surprises me anymore.

"Today, we heard him try to walk away from the USS Abraham 'End of Major Combat Operations' announcement, absurdly claiming that the White House was not responsible for the 'Mission Accomplished' banner that decorated the flight deck. He tried to argue that our actions are supported by the Iraqi people, when poll after poll suggests that more and more Iraqis are becoming fed up with the American occupation. And he was adamant that the US will remain in Iraq, but failed to offer any insight as to what he would do to address the increasingly dire situation.

"This President appears to lack the leadership skills required to do what is necessary to successfully stabilize and reconstruct Iraq before the window of opportunity closes. Instead, President Bush seems content to pursue the current flawed plan, unwilling to do what is necessary to encourage our friends and allies to assist, incapable of taking the steps necessary to expedite the transfer of sovereignty to the Iraqis, and content to direct billions of dollars to special interests like Halliburton. And US troops and taxpayers are suffering as a result.

"We need a president who will show true leadership and make the tough choices. In Iraq, this means turning over planning and oversight of reconstruction to the State Department; doing everything in our power to encourage our allies and friends to join us in Iraq by sending their troops, their money, and their expertise to accelerate the reconstruction process; restoring law and order and the resumption of basic services that are fundamental to success in all other areas; turning over sovereignty to the Iraqis as soon as possible; and awarding reconstruction contracts -- not to special interests like Halliburton -- but to the best US or foreign bidder.

24. Richard Holbrooke doesn't want the UN in...the blue helmets are
tainted. He's stated on Charlie Rose a couple of times that Norway, which has a history of good relations with Iraq, should be the country to organize personnel from various countries to go in. The US has screwed up and the UN is no longer trusted either after years of sanctions.

As I wrote elswhere, I'm surprised none of the Dem candidates have picked up on Holbrooke's idea!!!

4. He said a mouthful there
but these words should be repeated over and over out loud: 'CURRENT FLAWED PLAN"

The admin. has not been right on Iraq from the very beginning. Everything they do is screwed up. From the lies last spring, stovepiping the intell, believing Chalabi, undermanning the forces, underestimating the looting, 'mission accomplished', 'bring it on', firing the ba'ath functionaries, the 87 bill, no coffin photos, blame the press, things are going well....

everything from begining to now, and we are no where near the end, has been a miscalculated step into clusterfuckdom

That is apparantly what you call people who speak plainly nowadays. Though personally I find the choice of words entirely appropriate.

7. what friends and allies? do we have any left?
> doing everything in our power to encourage our allies and friends
> to join us in Iraq by sending their troops, their money, and their
> expertise to accelerate the reconstruction process

this ain't gonna happen with chimpy in charge. the rest of the world holds nothing but contempt for the bag of sh*t and the only countries that will lift a finger with a symbolic offering of a handful of soldiers are the ones small enough for chimpy to bribe (with our tax dollars). maybe dean (and the rest of the dems) should point out that, if for no other reason, chimpy must be dethroned so that the USA's good standing in the global community can be quickly regained and our old friends and allies will be happy to help us pick up the pieces of the botched iraq invasion.

this courtesy of the "Sloan Sessions" on NPR yesterday:

The 87 bill. is on top of our record defecit. This money is borrowed from other countries. The bill comes due for our children and grandchildren. as allan sloan put it '* is putting the war on the national credit card' held by foreign banks.

The mods just probably missed this one. You should hit alert like I just did.

Starting a new thread after one has been locked already just pisses the mods and admins off.

16. Maybe Kerry was in a plane?
Making a speech? Dealing with Senate business? Maybe he writes his own remarks?

I don't think this is supposed to be a speedtrap, is it?

21. Maybe Kerry was having problems assembling a 'focus group' to tell
him what he thought? Coulda been ice climbing, kite fishing, motorbiking in the desert, swimming with hungry giant mutant piranhas, jumping off cliffs on pogo sticks into lion cages, wrestling with rabid bears, parachuting into Iraq on a secret mission to get Saddam, or some other 'MANLY MAN' activities??? OR 'on a plane??'

Dean '04...

20. Again dean hits the nail on the head.
Edited on Tue Oct-28-03 07:14 PM by Egnever
On a side note the diferences between this statement and kerry's are glaring. It makes me wonder what took Kerry so long to come up with his.

One reads like the statement of a diplomat the other reads like the statement of a kid saying nyah nyah nyah I am the real war hero!

Six hours for that boggles the mind.
