Andy Rooney on 60 minutes...
I just caught Andy Rooney on 60 minutes reading his mail from his less than positive review of the "passion" movie. Boy, was there a lot of hate pent up in those letters. Is that the message Jesus was trying to impart, or should I say Mel?

2. the passion story always arouses these emotions
in theory it's about a wonderful sacrifice god made out of his love for you. or something like that, i'm not christian and won't pretend to really understand the true message. but i do know that it's not supposed to be a hate message.

however, historically, the telling of the passion story always arouses in the fervent masses strong emotions of anger, hatred, and protectiveness at seeing their savior suffering and killed.

add to that bu**sh**'s fanning the flames with his whole 'you're either with us or against us' black and white attitude, and you've got a recipe for much worse than a few angry letters for rooney.

3. The conundrum is...
that if Jesus hadn't suffered and been killed, we would never have been saved. We should feel elation, not anger.

5. Christianity has some
really conflicting messages. I say this as fomeone who was once considering entering the Methodist ministry.

First of all, they've got to scare the hell out of you for you to accept that you need to be saved.

Then, they make a big deal about Jesus sacrifice and passion.

We hear of people all the time, particularly in war, who gave up their life for their buddies, etc. If Jesus was the son of God, which he said, and knew that his sacrifice would save the world, and knew that he would come back in 3 days to ascend into heaven, what's the big deal? Doesn't seem like much of a sacrifice to me.
