Gambian media to register or 'go to hell'
Banjul - Gambia's National Media Commission has given journalists and privately owned media three more months to register with the state, after President Yahya Jammeh said they must or could "go to hell".

The commission, whose decisions do not affect the state-run media in the small west African country, had previously warned private companies they would be shut down if they failed to register before May 14.

The president of the Gambia Press Union (GPU), Pa Nderry Mbai, on Monday told AFP that the commission had extended the deadline for three months from May 17.

On Saturday night, Jammeh warned journalists. "We don't want to create a precedent," he said. "You either register or you don't write, or you can go to hell. This is my message to them."
