Now this is why I hate Faux News...
From the Star Tribune article "Freaky Franken Friday: Book release, Fox lawsuit hearing scheduled"...

Satirist Al Franken's new book will hit stores Friday, the same day lawyers will hit a New York courtroom to offer arguments in a lawsuit the book has generated.

In Monday's New York Daily News, O'Reilly wrote that his network and program are successful because "We don't do drive-by character assassinations, and we don't denigrate opposing points of view by launching gratuitous personal attacks."

Fox's suit described Franken with such terms as "shrill," "unstable" and "deranged."

Aaron Brown's ``Newsnight'' on CNN tonight. It will be repeated at 1 am EDT (actually 1:49, I think) which you would really enjoy. He talks all about this and minces no words. He said that O'Reilly was behind the lawsuit, of course!

They were hypocritical when they filed that lawsuit.

He has pushed the envelope a few times, recently. He not only used this as an excuse to rip into FOX News, but really enjoyed it when Al Franken said that that Bush* was a liar. With a glint in his eye, he made him repeat his words in case anyone had missed them.

I agree that The Daily Show is also very well-done. Did you happen to catch this priceless segment?

21. Thank you for your welcome
Thank you Rhiannon,

I've always respected Mr Kucinich's positions even though I'm leaning more towards Edwards. I spend alot of time watching Fox and reading their website for things that are just so wrong. I take that information and send emails to places like fair.org and other fairness in media outlets. Recently I forwarded an article by Fox detailing the "fallacy of agent orange" and its effects of soldiers to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Fox's position was that the soldiers we're faking their illnesses and that John Kerry pushed legislation allowing Vietnam to sue the US. None of this it true of course but just showing it to the toothless viewers of Fox who will never research it is damage enough. I've done medical research at the University of Texas for 12 years, I'm in Washington now, and I've read the research on Agent Orange, a deadly dioxin. For Fox to belittle its effects is criminal and demeaning to our servicemen who served in Vietnam. No matter what we feel about that war we must look at what harm our chemical weapons may have caused them. We owe them that. Even if its just one voice I will continue to monitor the likes of Fox and the Washington Post to "out" these pseudo journalists. Even to the point of calling for boycotts of their advertisers.

22. I agree with you completely, mharris660
I used to work with a guy who was a Vietnam vet. He told me fascinating and frightening stories of his service. He even brought photos of the spraying of Agent Orange. Those who served deserve better than they are getting, but those in Iraq, not to mention even those who served on World War II are also being shortchanged by the cutbacks in Veterans' benefits. It is one of the worst things that they have done, so far, IMO.

I continue to support Dennis Kucinich, though I know that he hasn't a prayer, more's the pity. But I think he is performing a valuable service by speaking out. I will support whoever is the nominee. I like some more than others. I do like Edwards a great deal, but am not sure, as a first term senator, if he is ready for the top spot. I have heard Kerry/Edwards. That would work for me. My friend who is working for Kerry in New Hampshire likes to think of Edwards as "a president in training."

Thanks so much for your thoughtful response and thanks for the good work. I also send many e-mails to participate in various "actions." FOX News is the worst, though I continue to be discouraged by the lack of aggressive reporting in the American media.:-(

23. Discouraged
Whatever the polls show Dennis Kucinich's voice has been heard. The numbers are not important. He touched you, thats whats important. To be affected and impowered by the words of a politician is what we as Americans should cherish. Whats important now is use that anger, that discouraged feeling, to take the media back. Just like Dennis Kucinich, you also have a voice. Find an article or news report that you find offensive. Grab it "by the balls" and take them to task. Whatever it takes. Organize boycotts, start a webpage, post flyers, contact celebrities. I've done that. Sometimes it works. The most important thing is to remember, the strongest voice in the world is yours. Its the voice that starts the yell.

I've started a website for writers to express their opinions. I'm new here and not sure of the rules so I better not post it until I learn the rules.

Michael

But I understand your hesitation. I take part in more actions than I can keep up with, political, enviromental, animal rights. I just heard back from my senator, Hillary Clinton, today, saying that she agrees with my views on the energy policy.

Thanks for your kind words regarding Dennis Kucinich. He speaks to my heart, as far as our nation's policies are concerned, and I am grateful that he continues to speak out, despite his discouraging primary results. I just don't get it. I will support the nominee, but I would love to live in Dennis Kucinich's world.:-)

I think it's pretty safe to post any website on DU as long as it's legitimate and not against the progressive principals of DU. Some people even post links to Free Republic, but just to prove a point. I have looked at this occasionally, but always regret it.

27. Fox morning
Edited on Thu Feb-12-04 08:30 AM by mharris660
OK I watched again, I got mad, I stopped shaking long enough to send an email. Here it is.

Fox News
Could this self serving morning crew be any more un-fair and balanced? To keep showing the meaningless Fonda-Kerry photo over and over while you spew forth the meaningless of it. Who are you kidding? This is just a ploy to force feed your viewers some obscure connection. This is without a doubt the most biases morning show on TV. Without going into a rant about the total lack of talent any of the hosts have, I would ask that you step back, look at what you're putting on the air, and ask yourselves. Are the American people so stupid they accept your views the current political situations? Or do you really believe this garbage? You have a morning show host asking Forbes about Botox. That is the most idiotic attack on a candidate so far. Fox rants about its ratings. Jerry Springer and Morton Downey had good ratings also. People love to watch train wrecks.

How do you three look at yourselves in the morning to shave? I said three I understand one of you is female but the Bush testosterone has caused a little growth. My guess is you shave each other so you don't have to face yourselves.

Michael Harris

28. Michael, you know what Faux News is. Why torture yourself?
I agree that we should all be e-mailing them, but I have serious doubts that it will do any good. They recently orchestrated the 39-hour Senate talk-a-thon in support of President Bush's most radically conservative judicial nominees to fit their broadcast schedule. It's ludicrous. Our first priority should be removing the squatter-in-chief from the White House and maybe then we will have the leverage to take on FOX News.

I didn't understand your P.S. What is the cat forum? I can help you out if you have questions about DU.

29. torture
More now than ever in our political history we have media outlets, such as Fox, forming public opinion with false and misleading coverage. They have lost their way. No longer is it journalism, its campaigning. With the Rupert Murdoch takeover of major media labels this election will be won and lost in this biased forum. Based on that I think we should use whatever voice we have to discredit these outlets at every possible chance we get. With that said I feel that the war for the White House first must go through the battles for the media. I think its very important to take these battles to advertisers, and media groups who report on this kind of journalism. One morning I watched the Fox morning show try to do a live broadcast from Penn State. Hundreds of students got in front of cameras every chance they got with signs and banners. Not since the late 60's and early 70's had I been so proud of our youth. They are taking a stand to win back fair journalism. I was thinking tonight and came up with kind of theory. We all love a good theory. I thought about how the media, and the campaign managers must hate the internet. Not in the way you might think but in the way that the internet keeps political theory's, dirt, and scandals alive. Think about this scenario. Bush's camp wanting the National Guard thing to go away. A back room deal is made asking the Dem campaign team not to use this and in turn we won't use you candidates speeches on the Vietnam War. Now all this is just a thought but with the internet these people loose the ability to stop this information. The internet is the best grass roots tool we have. Sorry I got preachy, its late.

p.s. I went to the cat forum thing and it said it was locked and wanted a password. I tried my DU one and it didn't work.

31. Michael, chill. I completely agree with you
The only difference that I think we have is that I think that the leadership must be changed first, then the media will follow. The media, of which I have been a part, looks to the way the wind is blowing, since they want to have access, so they are first on any story. What we need to concentrate on is the change in leadership. A more accessible one, of course, but also one that reflects the needs of the American people, the environment, anti-terrorism, which certainly does not include Iraq, and so much more. I would prefer that FOX News be dealt with in this environment. I think it would be much more effective. I welcome your thoughts on this matter.:-)

42. Speaking of Tunisia
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=04/02/18/1639210

President Bush is scheduled to meet with Tunisian President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali at the White House today. It is the first visit to Washington by an Arab leader since Bush unveiled his so-called initiative for democracy in the Middle East.
Tunisia is seen by Washington as a key ally in the war on terror. They receive modest U.S. military aid, and the two countries conduct joint military exercises.

Secretary of State Colin Powell on Tuesday saluted Ben Ali as a strong friend and praised the Tunisian government but advised him to put more effort into political reform.

Human rights groups have called on Bush to press Ben Ali to allow more freedoms and dissent. The Tunisian Human Rights League, the country's only legal independent rights group, reports the government routinely beats dissidents and rights campaigners and muzzles the press.

Ben Ali took power from Tunisia's first president Habib Bourguiba in a bloodless palace coup in 1987. In the past three presidential elections, Ben Ali was reelected with an official tally of more than 99 percent. He is eligible to stand for reelection in 2004 and again in 2009 after parliament approved constitutional amendments.

43. Kiran Chetry is the best
She subbed this morning for the regular morning bimbo. She won't last long. She didn't play along with the right-wing rally format. She even kept her legs crossed and didn't say or ask anything stupid.

The best part (so far) is when that one bozo announced that unemployment is "really low," and she pointed out that a lot of people aren't counted because they aren't looking, but they still don't have jobs. Poor bozo had no response...

I think we need to have a commission to find out who allowed an honest woman to end up live on Faux "News!" My guess is that she won't be back tomorrow.

46. That is decent news
And I agree with her assessment of the unemployment situation. I cannot stand to listen to Faux News. CNN and some shows on MSNBC are preferable, though sometimes I get irritated with them, as well, having gotten used to the level of discourse and points of view expressed on DU.
