Top 10 cars named -- and none are American
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Japanese carmakers -- or, more specifically, Honda followed by Toyota and Subaru -- took all ten spots in this year's Consumer Reports magazine top picks.

No American or European nameplates are represented in this year's list, which is published in the April issue of Consumer Reports magazine.

Of the five Honda vehicles on Consumer Reports' Top Picks, four are manufactured in the U.S. The remaining vehicle, the Honda Ridgeline, was designed and engineered in the U.S. but is built in Canada.

1. I am not surprised
I will never own an American car ever again.

Too much maintenance, I own a 2002 PT.

Problems that have occurred should have never occurred.

My next car is a Scion tC

2. I will never buy GM
My wife had a Cavalier, and the transmission was constantly breaking down. She had been sold an "extended warranty", which turned out to be from a "separate company", which conveniently immediately went out of business. I'm sure the salesman laughed all the way to the bank.

Ford's not much better as far as their salespeople trying to play clever games.

3. Are there ANY American cars any more?
Seems to me they are all from companies with majority foreign ownership and made with parts sourced from places where labor costs are under $3 an hour.

7. i believe many 'foreign' cars are actually made here these days.
it's just that the design and management or whatever is foreign. for example, my ex's 2002 Mazda was made in, like, Tennessee, and most of the parts came from Michigan and Ohio.

however, I'm just saying this off the top of my head, so my stats may be off. but the point stands.

5. So what?
Nearly half were assembled here, by US workers.
All manufacturers use 'outsourced' parts suppliers, including both 'American' manufacturers - Ford & GM.
Why do you care where the headquarters are? Do the salaries of the top execs really help the domestic economy?
All of these companies are publicly traded, which means that the vast majority of the ownership is a relatively few rich people. Unless 'trickle down' economics really works, it doesn't matter whether those people live in Japan, the U.S., or Europe.

The days of the world economy depending on automobile manufacturers is over. Let the Japanese and the Europeans have them. We need to concentrate on alternative transport, energy, health, housing, food production, & water technologies.
