(Renewable) Energy Measure Blocked by Republicans in Senate
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/15/washington/15energy.html?ref=us

WASHINGTON, June 14 — Senate Democrats, facing their first significant battle over a wide-ranging bill intended to reduce oil consumption, found themselves blocked by Republicans on Thursday and postponed all significant votes until next week.

Republicans vowed to filibuster over a Democratic proposal that would force electric utility companies to generate a big share of their power from renewable fuels, and Democrats failed to muster the 60 votes needed to close off debate.

The impasse forced Democrats to begin negotiating a possible compromise with Republicans and the power industry, which have argued that companies in many parts of the country simply cannot generate enough power from wind or solar energy to meet the requirements.

“We’re trying to work something out,” said Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Senate Democratic leader. But by early evening, the principle negotiators had failed to reach a deal and Democrats decided to postpone further voting until next Tuesday.

1. Does it not continue to amaze you that
the Repukes in the minority can continue time and again to block every goddam thing the incompetent Dems propose

why was it the opposite when the Repukes held power? How the Dems told us they could do nothing to stop the Pukes as they had no power?

THE REPUKES ARE MAKING A LAUGHING STOCK OF THE DEMOCRATS; BLOCKING EVERYTHING THEY PROPOSE, OUR DEM CONGRESS IS AT 23% APPROVAL RATING AND RIGHTLY SO

AND COME NEXT ELECTION DAY THEY MAY REALLY HAVE SOMETHING TO BE WORRIED ABOUT

I MYSELF DON'T GIVE A GOOD DAMN ANYMORE - I AM JUST BEYOND FED UP

2. this is ironic, actually
(full disclosure, a friend of mine basically wrote this bill) anyone know what state has the highest RPS (renewable portfolio standard)? texas.

the states that this will potentially economically hurt the most are blue states (the Northeast and midwest, well, plus Alaska) a low RPS is a piece of cake in places like Texas, Oklahoma, the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, Kanas, the big plains states that have large wind capacity. This is an economic BOON to those states, and the wingnuts refuse to play on principle alone. idiots.

3. Actually, Maine's 30% RPS is the nation's highest (and already achieved)
Most of the Northeast states already have RPSs...

http://www.eere.energy.gov/states/maps/renewable_portfolio_states.cfm#chart

(note: New Hampshire and Oregon recently passed RPSs, Maine's revised RPS is 10% additional renewable sources by 2017)

The southern states are the ones that are screeching the most about this.

They claim they have no renewable energy resources - the sun does not shine on Dixie and the heavily forested South does not have any biomass resources according to the GOP naysayers....
