Brazil: Energy council recommends nuclear plant be finished
Hmmm ...

Dick Cheney doesn't like President Lula at all.

Perhaps this isn't as simple as we thought.

Brazil: Energy council recommends nuclear plant be finished

BRASILIA Brazil's energy council on Monday recommended that the country resume construction of its third nuclear power plant.

The National Energy Policy Council will send its recommendation to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who will make a final decision on whether to restart work on the plant, said interim Mines and Energy Minister Nelson Hubner.

...

Earlier Monday, a small group of demonstrators protested peacefully against Angra 3's construction.

Another small group of representatives of labor unions and other groups who favor Angra 3 demonstrated at the same time.

The Angra reactors are rated at 1100 MWe each, for the output of about 4000 Mitsubishi MWT-1000 1000 kW (1 MWe) wind plants (based on 20% wind and 80% nuclear capacity utilization), a technology which I also support, but sadly realize is receiving no significant financial commitment beyond PR. Note, for instance, that only 1380 Mitsubishi wind turbines of any kind are in service, worldwide, with a capacity of 587 MW (I assume that's MWe) in total.

Mitsubishi is slacking, because Gamesa estimates that there is 70,000 MWe of installed aerogeneration capacity world-wide. Gamesa manufactures 700 kW and a 2000 kW models, and they look way cooler, too.

The Brazilian pampas would seem to be an ideal place to site wind plants. But in any case, it looks like they are going to get their third reactor.
