One of the nation's largest solar-electric generating plants has begun producing power in the San Luis Valley.

Beltsville, Md.-based developer SunEdison said the Alamosa Photovoltaic Solar Plant is generating 44 percent of its capacity, about 3.6 megawatts, with the power being purchased by Xcel Energy.

When completed by Dec. 31, the plant is scheduled to produce its full capacity, 8.2 megawatts, making it the largest solar-electric, or photovoltaic, facility in the nation.

At full production, the plant will generate enough power to supply 1,500 homes.

1. this is good but I can't see these large installations making the difference
we'll be in better shape if every house or neighborhood builds small installations all over the country
