Wind farm begins operations

The Denver Business Journal

Gov. Bill Ritter on Tuesday flipped the switch on Colorado's newest and largest wind farm, which when complete will have 274 turbines capable of generating up to 300 megawatts of power.

The $480 million Cedar Creek Wind Energy Project is a joint venture of Babcock & Brown, based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, with two-thirds ownership, and BP Alternative Energy, with one-third ownership. It's located near Grover in northern Weld County in northeast Colorado.

...

With Tuesday's dedication, about 250 turbines -- capable of generating up to 280 megawatts of power -- will start spinning, with the remaining turbines to start operations by year-end.

The wind farm will be capable of providing power to up to 90,000 homes when complete.

1. wind farms
Texas is the state with the most wind farms. Being involved in
a wind farm project in Texas, I can only hope that this type
of energy producing business grows. This project will produce
150 MW consisting of 75 2-MW turbines for 30 years.

I like being involved with Gamesa Energy USA, and not with a
oil business who is looking into wind farming. My trust in Big
Oil is weak, they can pull out their funding any minute.

2. 274 turbines generating 300MW ??
After re-reading the post, I wonder why only 274 turbines
generate 300MW? The citizens of Colorado may be getting less
than full value of corporate/government agreement of $480
million.

Why is the government involved anyway? When a private business
enters a community, contracts with the owners of the land
needed for wind farming, builds right-of-ways to the
farms, installs the turbines and electrical grid, why would the
state government be involved. Unless it is the object of
insurance, making it financially liable to its corporate
partners.

Maybe, the citizens of Colorado will be paying much more than
sticker price.

What's wrong with the free enterprise idea (no government
involvement)of producing a product that is good for its
consumers at a lower than market price and Green Friendly.
