Wiscasset turns down energy project (coal gasification/liquefaction plant, Maine)

WISCASSET — Wiscasset voters defeated four ballot questions Tuesday that would have cleared the way for a coal gasification plant on land once occupied by the Maine Yankee nuclear power plant.

Question Two, which would have allowed the plant to exceed the zone's height limit and was the key ballot question in moving the plan forward, was defeated 868-707, according to Town Clerk Sandra Johnson.

The remaining three questions, which would have changed language in town zoning ordinances to facilitate the plant, were defeated by similar margins. Just over 50 percent of the town's 3,000 registered voters cast ballots.

Despite the outcome, developers of the plant said they have not given up on their plans and will consider commissioning further studies that they hope will persuade voters support the project.

Opponents said the vote demonstrates that Wiscasset does not want to host a coal gasification plant.

Of course, everybody in Maine lives on the family estate fueled by wood fires, sustainably harvested from oodles and oodles of acres, but when the Sable Island natural gas fields run out - and they will - well, let's put it this way, they ain't gonna live off solar toys.

The percentage of electricity generated in Maine rose from 39.9% in 1990 to 66% in 2005.

They will burn coal in Maine or they'll live in the dark - rich yuppie brats excepted.

Maine generates 55% of its electricity from renewable sources (hydro and biomass) and only 38% of its electricity from natural gas...

So when "the gas runs out" Maine will be in pretty good shape - even it the 1000 MW of new on-shore wind capacity and hundreds of MW of new tidal and dozens of MW of new biomass capacity don't come on line.

It is Nuclear-New-Jersey-Which-Is-A-Fraud that will be up Shit Creek when the gas runs out...
