I like the idea of one with a cell phone charger option: http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/dynamo_mt-023.htm

3. I would recommend that you use something like this (link) UNLESS...
...you need a really big beam. Right here.

LED's are your best bet as far as efficiency goes.

5. Oooh they have a wind-up lantern too! (Can you tell I am sick
of having no or low charge batteries when the power goes out?) :P

7. Solar LED garden lights work well too
I've used them camping - I got a bunch of 2 AA Nicad battery LED garden lights from Aubuchon (Malibu brand - 4 bucks a piece, end of the season sale :) - mounted them on dowels on a 2 x 4 with "legs" that allowed them to sit upright or at a 45 degree angle (to track the sun during the day).

When the sun goes down, they come on automatically. I can remove them, set them upside down where needed or use the 2 x 4 as a "light bar".

Individually, they put out the equivalent of candle light. Collectively they light the campsite up just fine, last all night and won't burn the tent down either.

Great for extended use too - waterproof, no throw-away batteries, no winding, no fuel.

6. Not what you asked for but...
For years now I've loved AA Mini MagLites. I have several around the house. Imagine my delight to find a 1 Watt LED "upgrade" for these marvels of practical engineering!

I bought one to try it out. So far, I like it. (I may give them at Christmas time.)

I've never really had much of a problem with flat batteries in my MagLites, and the way this LED sips electricity, I'm not concerned in the least.

I lead a week of "Summer Camp" in the woods each year. This year, some (Jr. High aged) campers came to camp with "shake lights." One wound up broken (electrically, somehow.) Years ago I was given a crank flashlight, which died mechanically.

Based on my limited personal experience, if you're looking for a guaranteed always-ready emergency light, I think I'd go with one of these shakable lights.

8. That sounds neat - a cell phone charger. I have one with a radio attached.
