Most filling stations in Southern Malawi have run out of diesel, a development that has spurred smuggling of the fuel by illicit traders. A snap survey in Blantyre, the country’s commercial hub, indicates that most fuel stations do not have enough stock of diesel or the commodity has completely run out.
The shortage heavily affected minibus operations to the extent that most operators could not ferry commuters to their destinations from Wednesday evening.
“We cannot continue to rely on the smugglers since it is now known that they are also running short of supply. It would be risky to use their fuel as we do not know whether it is genuine diesel or not,” said Isaac Phiri, a minibus driver in Blantyre.
Interim Chairman for Petroleum Retailers Association acknowledged the diesel shortage but referred the matter the Petroleum Importer Limited to shed more on why there is scarcity of the fuel.
