US giving Japan location of Greenpeace, Sea Shepherd ships
From the website of the "Institute of Cetacean Research of Japan":

"Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace’s movements are being monitored by the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence Civil Maritime Analysis Department’s worldwide piracy report, which provides information on threat to and criminal action against merchant shipping worldwide."

http://www.icrwhale.org/eng/060105Release.pdf

My favorite part: "During the research operations, the captains of the research vessels are broadcasting the following caution notice: “This is a warning! Stop your obstructive actions immediately! Keep away from our ship! Or we will have to hose you to fend you off!”"

Turn around! We are being hosed by the Japanese whalers!

2. The whales are the ones getting hosed.
Sea Shepherd is acting lawfully under the United Nation's World Charter for Nature, which allows for the enforcement of international conservation law by non-governmental organizations in international jurisdictions. According to their web site:

Sea Shepherd cooperates fully with all international law enforcement agencies and its enforcement activities complying with standard practices of law and policing enforcement.

Sea Shepherd adheres to the utilization of non-violent principles in the course of all actions and has taken a standard against violence in the protection of the oceans.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society respects and acts in accordance with the following international treaties, declarations, conventions, and charters:

The World Charter for Nature
U.N. Doc. A/37/51 (1982)

The International Whaling Commission (IWC)

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)
March 3rd, 1973, Washington, D.C.

United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea
December 10th, 1982, Montego Bay

The Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage
November 23rd, 1972, Paris, France

The Convention of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)

The Japanese and their American enablers are the only pirates in this picture.

3. The UN needs to get specific about prohibiting whale hunts
and start talking about enforcement. Positions adopted under the World Charter for Nature, IWC, etc are all too vague and unenforceable.

5. That's about as likely as the UN getting tough with Israel.
Japan just buys enough "supporters" to keep stalling any attempt to
tighten up the existing laws ... and with today's news that the US
government is actively assisting the whalers, I can't see that situation
changing while there are still whales living in the ocean.

The ONLY chance that the whales have is for activists to disable the
whalers by whatever means possible - preferably while in their home port
but at sea if necessary.

although actually the situation with small island countries like Japan and Iceland should be looked upon differently than larger countries. They both depend on the sea to eat. Taking any endangered species off the table (no pun intended) is a given, but from a moral standpoint they see us killing thousands of head of cattle every day -- another mammal -- and see hypocrisy.

So while killing whales must be stopped, IMO it's important to understand why the Japanese are defensive about fishing.

After going to the website of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency it appears that in the past they have provided only reports on environmental activist groups that were submitted by the public, so it's not clear they are providing the Japanese with any realtime data.
