General Motors Corporation Honored with Inaugural EARTH ANGEL Award at 2008 International Car of the Year Awards

(CSRwire) DETROIT,MI - January 12 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to the fluctuation of gas prices and growing concern for global warming, the International Car of the Year Awards (ICOTY) recently polled automakers about the strides they were making in addressing environmental issues and global warming.

Based on a review of their answers by the ICOTY Awards jury, a group of respected automotive journalists from a variety of automotive publications, General Motors was awarded the inaugural EARTH ANGEL Award as the most environmentally-friendly automaker.

U.S. Senator Carl Levin presented the award to Elizabeth A. Lowery, Vice President of Environment, Energy and Safety Policy for General Motors Corporation at the 12th Annual ICOTY Awards dinner in Detroit on January 12. Road & Travel Magazine Editor-in-Chief Courtney Caldwell and Edmunds.com Editorial Director Kevin Smith, both judges on the ICOTY jury, co-presented the award, which was sponsored by Bridgestone.

"GM is continually working to improve its environmental footprint around the world," said Lowery. "We are proud to have the International Car of the Year jury recognize our efforts and we are extremely honored to be the first recipient of this new EARTH ANGEL Award."

1. Is that in recognition for their aborted 1969 hybrid?

I know, 39 years is plenty of time to have a proper change in mindset, but still... I'm Gen-X. I', supposed to be cynical.

2. Yup, the market's finally caught up
People treat the Prius as some miracle of modern science. As you point out, GM tested a parallel hybrid decades ago.

It's taken all this time for the price of oil to rise enough to make them marketable.

5. Caught up, overtaken and pissed on GM on the way past ...
> People treat the Prius as some miracle of modern science.

No, few people do that. Most treat it as an opportunity gratefully taken.

> As you point out, GM tested a parallel hybrid decades ago.

Then what happened? Did they improve it? Did they take and maintain the
lead in the market? Did they try using their marketing weight to get people
to do the smart thing? Did they buggery. All they did was take photos,
bluster for a short while then scrap it as the leadership saw it as a
potential threat to the gas-guzzling heaps of crap that they were so good
at selling to the obedient (if somewhat brain-dead) consumer.

That implies that GM have got a product to sell now. They haven't.
They're still selling vapour, promises and brochures.
All you can get today (and in the next few years) will be their usual
super-sized shit-heaps.

*THAT* is the spirit of GM, not innovation, not world-leading technology
but "paint it green and ship it".

Hmmm... I guess you mean they aren't selling the Volt.

They actually are selling hybrids.

My first car was a VW, and I've always had a soft spot for them. Here, a VW exec says pretty much the same thing Lutz was roundly criticized for:

Will hybrid become the dominant power source in the next few years?
Hybrid technology is a very expensive way to save a small amount of fuel. The cost/benefit analysis is quite on the expensive side, but we're politically pressed to develop hybrids by the U.S. market.

If someone said that every car must be a hybrid, the car industry would be bankrupt quicker than anything else. Even Toyota would have problems if they had to produce hybrids in high volumes. But politically we have to do a certain amount of hybrids.

9. Oops ...
... you're right: I was thinking of the Volt rather than the Saturn & co.

I still think the "Yukon Hybrid" is a joke but you were correct and I was
mixing apples & oranges. Thanks for the correction.

10. It happens
(The Volt is what is receiving the most publicity.)

As for the Yukon Hybrid, think about it for a moment...

You can make a pretty efficient small car, without resorting to hybrid technology (consider the Honda CR-X.) On the other hand, assuming there's good reason for a vehicle like the Yukon, hybridizing them makes a lot of sense.

3. Actually, GM has unleashed its engineering staff
And they have obtained some pretty impressive results with gas/electric and electric drive trains. But these early results are the first steps in a series of more aggressive programs to achieve performance and dramatic cut or eliminate emissions. Motor Trend has had several good articles on this lately.

GM has always had a top notch design and engineering staff. Their management has long sucked.
