Saudi Schools Close, Pipes Freeze As Temps Hit Record Lows Of 21F - Novosti
ABU-DHABI, January 16 (RIA Novosti) - Unusually cold weather has smashed decades-old records in Saudi Arabia, with meteorologists forecasting a further cooling, the al-Watan newspaper said on Wednesday.

The cold snap has mainly hit northern parts of the country, where temperatures reached a record low of -6 degree Centigrade (21.2 degree Fahrenheit), freezing water in pipes and closing schools and other facilities. Local authorities had to ration kerosene due to an acute shortage of fuel for heating purposes.

King Abdullah ordered the distribution of blankets and heaters to his freezing subjects.

5. Actually might be, under present theory over the last 20 years yes.
Basically, Global warming predicts several things to occur, mostly higher temperatures, but in some places "other things" for example here are some things that can and will happen under present theory:

First higher AVER GE temperatures as you near the poles. Thus Ice Shelves will disappear do to the higher average temperatures.

Second, Shorter, but more intense winters, instead of three months of bad weather you may end up with 1 1/2 months. The Temperated and Polar regions will still get less sunlight in winter then in Summer, causing Temperatures to drop and producing some sort of winter. The winter will be warmer, on average then today's winter, but when you get ot the period of minimal sunlight, expect a quick drop in temperatures. As the winter ends and the area gets more and more sunlight it will warm up quickly, driven by warm air from the Tropics. Thus you can have a short severe winter, followed by Spring and a longer, hotter summer.

Third, The East Antarctic ice Sheet will get THICKER (While the Greenland and West Antarctic Ice Sheets melt away). This is do to the fact as the earth warms, the air be able to carry more wateR (higher the air Temperatures the more moisture it can hold). This will dump more snow and ice on the East Antarctic Ice Sheet making it thicker.

Fourth, a drop in the Trade Winds. Present theory holds that winds occur because of the Differences in temperatures between the Tropics and the Poles, when the temperature of both are about the same expect winds to die down (Through is will occur AFTER all of the Ice Sheets are gone which may NOT happen in centuries).

Just some of the thoughts based on what will happen as the world warms up.

6. Are there any reports that put this in a larger weather context?
For example, is it a massive jet-stream dip from the north? Where is this cold air coming from?
