Philadelphia - Philadelphia is getting the largest solar electric power plant on the East Coast, Mayor Michael Nutter announced yesterday from City Hall.

The new solar power plant will be built on a vacant, seven-acre field within the Navy Yard on what the mayor calls "environmentally marginal land."

The plant is expected to produce up to one megawatt of power per year, enough energy to meet the needs of 200 homes. The Navy Yard project is said to have the same ecological impact as planting 300 acres of trees.

The city economic development agency, in conjunction with the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC), entered into a long-term lease with Epuron, a subsidy of Exelon, one of the world's largest renewable energy companies, to buy energy produced at the new Exelon-Epuron Solar Center.
