SUBJECT: The solar photovoltaic (PV) industry.

SIGNIFICANCE: Supported by favourable subsidy regimes, the solar PV industry is expected to maintain its current rate of rapid growth, raising its long-term potential to contribute substantively to world energy supply.

ANALYSIS: The solar photovoltaic (PV) industry has expanded rapidly over the past six years as supply-side concerns have eased, particularly supply of solar grade silicon: Worldwide total installed PV capacity was 6,500 mwp (megawatts peak) at end-2006, compared with 1,200 mwp at end-2000, according to the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA).

Installed capacity increased by 1,467 megawatts (mw) in 2006, compared with 1,320 mw in 2005.
