5/23 National Ice Center - Large Linear Melt Zones Near N. Pole; Beaufort Losing Coverage Rapidly
High Arctic East - obvious large linear loss areas on Siberian side of Pole - some within approximately 100 miles.

Beaufort Sea - large loss areas of less than 1/10th coverage near Canadian archipelago, south near Point Turnagain:

Chukchi Sea - some expansion in thinning area stretching NE to Deadhorse/Prudhoe:

Barents NW - substantial clearing to less than 1/10th coverage within archipelago, also to north, but still fairly consistent with last week's report:

Barents NE - some clearing around Franz Josef Land, otherwise main ice line holding fairly steady:

High Arctic West 1 - continuation of linear features seen closer to Pole:

Baffin Bay - down to less than 1/10th south of Kane Basin:

2. No net effect from floating ice caps - it's the Greenland/Ellesmere glaciers that I worry about . .
It should be an interesting summer.

3. I can't believe how fast this is happening!
Suddenly, the world is melting ... everywhere. Yet we still have idiots in our government who believe global warming is a myth. :eyes:

4. Correction No net effect on sea level from floating ice caps, big effects for salinity and reflectiv
disastrous effects for Attic mammals.

5. The reflect part is what I am worried about.
Without all that reflective ice up there the amount of energy absorbed will greatly increase leading to accelerated loss of ice in areas that WILL have an impact on sea level and salinity.

Overall we sure as hell better enjoy the 10 year break from global warming. Because when we exit out of it there is going to be chaos.

8. I heard that more albedo could be produced, but there's just no demand for it.

12. Why do you suppose the melt's happening so irregularly this year?
Any theories?

13. I have a theory.
It's an artifact of so much ice being thin single-year ice. It expands and contracts, separates and buckles, with greater ease.

14. That's similar to my theory
The ice isn't really thawing, it's just breaking. The ice is fragile enough to break easily, but it's still really cold up there so it refreezes quickly.
