Global Solar Photovoltaic 2009 Market Size Raised to 7.3 GW

15 de abril de 2010

Newly connected solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in Germany soared to 1.46 GW in December, almost three times the previous record rate of monthly connections of 0.50 GW set in November.

This means that 38% of 2009 PV grid connections in the country were recorded in the final month of the year. As a consequence of this late surge, the 2009 PV market in Germany reached 3.87 GW and the global PV market rose to 7.30 GW, up 20% on prior year installations. This is an increase of 0.87 GW on the previous Solarbuzz 2009 market size determination.

The PV industry generated $43 billion in global revenues in 2009, while successfully raising over $13.5 billion in equity and debt, up 8% on the prior year. European countries accounted for 5.60 GW, or 77% of world demand in 2009. The top three countries in Europe were Germany, Italy and Czech Republic, which collectively accounted for 4.07 GW. All three countries experienced soaring demand, with Italy becoming the second largest market in the world.

...

The third largest market in the world was the United States, which grew 36% to 485 MW. Following closely behind was a rejuvenated Japan, which took fourth spot, growing 109%.

1. But how do we take advantage?

China has decided to become a world leader in solar, so they are building factories and attracting investment.

The U.S.? With 27 million unemployed? Might we decide to get in a race with them for who could be the best? Fund some education, business training,
community manufacturing? They are ahead of us today, especially in educating engineers, but this could be such an opportunity...not the only one out there, but why let others have all the fun just so we can become a customer when gas hits $10 a gallon?

2. Well, given how miserable that is, I guess it proves for the 50th year in a row, that solar will not
in fact save us, but that it sure will produce a lot of complaceny for gas companies to exploit.

That's not sufficient to stop one gas plant on this planet from being built, especially with solar's poor capacity utilization.

No wonder the solar industry can only talk "peak power" and refuses to discuss energy.

3. Be interesting to see how much new capacity is installed
now the German government has canceled the incentives. The story below talks about expected drop, but we will have to wait and see.
