Bill Gates' cloud-whitening trials 'a dangerous experiment'
11th May, 2010

Microsoft founder Bill Gates providing funding for geoegineering experiment to increase whiteness of clouds, reflect more sunlight back into space and reduce global warming

Campaigners have criticised plans for a sea trial of cloud-whitening technology, funded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

A US-based research body, Silver Lining, which has received $300,000 from Mr Gates, is developing machines to convert seawater into microscopic particles to be sprayed into clouds. Scientists believe this will increase the whiteness, or albedo, of clouds and increase their ability to reflect more sunlight back into space, reducing global warming.

The Gates-backed sea trial would be the largest known attempt to geoengineer the climate so far, reported to be conducted over an area of 10,000km2.

However, campaigners say such a large-scale trial is 'risky' and that a global ban on geoengineering experiments should be put in place until regulations governing the sector can be introduced.

'We knew Microsoft was developing cloud applications for computers but we didn’t expect this. Bill Gates and his cloud-wrenching cronies have no right to unilaterally change our seas and skies in this way,' said Jim Thomas from Canadian environmental campaigners, ETC Group.

1. Typical
There has yet to be a "scientific solution" to global warming that isn't based on profiting from the situation rather than actually fixing it. It's like the outlook of the American medical profession; a few pills of "treatment" is worth way way more than either a prevention or a cure.

2. Ain't capitalism grand?
What's wrong with this scheme is that the salts and minerals in seawater will condense the moisture and cause rain, defeating the purpose.

4. why exactly does 'causing rain' defeat the purpose?
The purpose is to mitigate global warming. How does rain increase global warming?

Gates is putting money into geo-engineering projects because there is a general consensus developing that the political will to directly address the causes of global warming does not exist: we have failed to do anything significant to avert the crisis. So now what? The crisis is upon us, we are past the tipping point. And still there is no political will to do anything real.

3. How would it be enforced
over international waters? I am imagining Gates can do this "because he can."

6. I'm no Bill Gates fan,
but really, we're in the end game and it's going faster than I thought it would. If this is successful, we might buy some time. If it fails, we might lose some time but probably not much. I don't know if you've noticed just how quiet the MSM has been about this gulf oil spill. We will be damn lucky if we only lose the entire gulf with this fuck up. With that going on, I just can't muster any outrage about whitening clouds.

7. Go Bill Go
We are already geo-engineering the planet so why not do it to counter the effects of GW.
