Nuclear Power: Opposition Spikes After Japan Earthquake

Americans by a 2-1 margin oppose building more nuclear power plants in the United States, an 11-point spike in opposition from a few years ago.

In the aftermath of Japan's nuclear plant crisis, 64 percent in this ABC News/Washington Post poll oppose new nuclear plant construction, while 33 percent support it. "Strong" opposition now far outstrips strong support, 47-20 percent. Opposition is up from 53 percent in a 2008 poll, and strong opposition is up even more, by 24 points.

The results reflect the significant challenges facing the nuclear power industry, which had been reaching for greater acceptance on the basis of factors including high oil prices, environmental concerns prompted by the Gulf oil spill a year ago and efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Opposition is not merely a not-in-my-back-yard phenomenon. The survey, conducted for ABC News by Langer Research Associates, finds that 67 percent of Americans oppose construction of a nuclear plant within 50 miles of their home -- not significantly different than the number who oppose it regardless of location. ...

1. Glad to hear that. It would be much greater if the catastrophe was a bigger news item nt

2. Deadly Silence on Fukushima
Article in HuffPo about that today. The media blackout is hard to fathom, isn't it?

5. Isn't the silence what you prefer?
Since the alternative would be a long line of stories demonstrating that readiation levels have fallen steadily for several weeks now and are not even detectable in many parts of the world?

But hey! I'm sure that it should be front page news that high levels of radiation are still detected inside the reactors. That's bound to scare somebody... right? And heck... there's yet another eacy-to-misread claim of recriticality that might scare someone... and the word "strontium" came up again ("Bone seeking!!!!"). Maybe if that could get a little more play it could scare someone.

3. "Spikes" compared to three years ago?
How about the CNN poll run at essentially the same time? Compared to ONE year ago, "strongly oppose" fell 18% and "strongly favor" climbed by 19%.

Then you could take a look at the ones done in the UK recently by FT or Populus that show essentially unchanged support now that irrational fears from Fukushima have subsided.
