Increased NRC inspection and oversight of the three-reactor plant near Athens, Ala., 100 miles south of Nashville will result, the agency says.
On Oct. 23, last year, a coolant injection valve failed to open. Operators were attempting to use a residual heat removal shutdown cooling system during the refueling of the reactor called Unit 1, according to the NRC.
TVA later determined that the last time the valve had definitely worked as required was on March 12, 2009.
