Was Fukushima a China Syndrome? [Time.com Ecocentric]

http://ecocentric.blogs.time.com/2011/05/16/was-fukushima-a-china-syndrome/

The China Syndrome refers to a scenario in which a molten nuclear reactor core could could fission its way through its containment vessel, melt through the basement of the power plant and down into the earth. <...> It’s a nightmare scenario, the stuff of movies. And it might just have happened at Fukushima. <...>

he fuel itself lies in a clump—either at the bottom of the pressure vessel, or in the basement below or possibly even outside the containment building. <...>

he water is escaping somewhere on a course cut by molten fuel–probably into the basement of the reactor building, though it’s also possible it melted through everything into the earth. <...>

Whatever the end game at Fukushima, get your head around this, folks: it is going to be a huge mess for a long time yet.

2. "fuel itself lies in a clump—either at the bottom of the pressure vessel, or in the basement below "
???

The containment vessel isn't even a possibility?

5. Same question.

It isn't there.

The article is a bad joke.

A number of you guys postulated what would happen if a core burned though all containment and entered the water table. Massive explosions... incredible radiation levels... mass death...

... and this guy thinks it might have already happened and we missed it?

7. True... they can't "know"
Edited on Mon May-16-11 05:15 PM by FBaggins
But not knowing does not mean that ANYTHING is likely (or even possible). The possibility that the RPV had holes burned it it doesn't really add any weight to the "burned down to the water table" BS.

If you really believed this... then what do you think of posters who claim that "they" DID know and have been hiding it all along?

8. The article says only it is one possibility, and you do not know the answer and they don't nt
