N.H. heating oil merchants launch energy conservation campaign

High fuel prices have even heating oil dealers asking customers to cut down on fuel consumption this winter.

The price of heating oil in New Hampshire has floated above $2 a gallon for most of the year. The latest data from the state Office of Energy and Planning reports the average price of a gallon of heating oil was $2.37 on Dec. 12, according to the latest posting on its Web site.

Fifty-six percent of New Hampshire households rely on oil to heat their homes - heating oil customers in New Hampshire burn about 556 million gallons of oil every year, according to the Oil Heat Council of New Hampshire, which on Tuesday launched a public energy conservation campaign.

The campaign features familiar hints to cut heat bills such as weather stripping doors and windows and using programmable thermostats and energy efficient appliances. Oil heat customers also can call local suppliers to get information on how to fuel help, council officials said.
