What's the status of dolphin-safe tuna these days?

I heard that free trade agreements pretty much gutted that "safety net" for dolphins. So I stopped buying so-called dolphin safe tuna cans till I could find out more about it. Does anyone know what's going on? How can I find canned tuna from sources that don't harm dolphins?

BTW, are Sardines also harmed?

...I think the biggest concern is the tuna themselves. Numbers are terribly low, and I recall vague warnings they may be "commercially" extinct in a few years. :(
Try http://www.fishonline.org - it's an EU site, but may give you some ideas for what to stick under the grill. :)

no way I can even look at tuna cans now ... sigh! We're really screwing up our oceans, aren't we? :(
