600 Firefighters, 8 Fires, 100 F In Portugal And It's Only June 7th - AFP

Nearly 600 firefighters battled nine wind-swept forest fires in Portugal on Tuesday amid scorching temperatures, emergency services said. All but one of the blazes, including the largest wildfire which has raged since Sunday near the town of Barcelos some 370 kilometres (225 miles) north of Lisbon, were under control, they said.

More than 200 firefighters backed by 69 fire trucks were at the scene of the fire near Barcelos, which has already ravaged over 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres) of land.

Firefighters said they suspect arson was to blame for the fire, which had a front of around 30 kilometres at one point.

Fires were raging in eight of mainland Portugal's 18 administrative districts: Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra, Evora, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo and Viseu.
