(Marianas) House OKs solar energy bill

Authored by Rep. Manuel A. Tenorio and five other lawmakers, House Bill 15-144 would direct the Northern Marianas Housing Corp. to urge all new home loan applicants to voluntarily incorporate solar thermal technologies and or water collection and storage system into new home developments.

The measure also proposes to have the NMHC develop a separate loan program that will provide loans for homeowners to install solar energy technologies and or a water reservoir.

The legislation was drafted in response to the increasing fuel prices, the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation's insufficient power generation capability, and Saipan's perennial water problem.

OK, so maybe that's not such world-shaking news, but since we are talking about Marianas anyway, perhaps folks here might want to take a few moments to make sure their U.S. congress representative is signed on to H.R. 5500, the Human Dignity Act -- which seeks to exploit the sidelining of Abramoff/DeLay to get some long overdue labor reform done there.

More on that here:
