Brazil's pseudo Hurricane

read a report today that meteorologists don't know what to call the storm because it looked like a hurricane but hurricanes have hot centers and this storm had a cold center. and was not started by heat.

It is a first of it's kind on earth. They don't know what to call it.

So the glaciers are melting at a fast pace, dead zones in the ocean are getting larger, don't even talk about the ozone layer, and the southern Atlantic is forming new kinds of storms.

it's too late.

1. I had no idea it had a cold core

Do you have a link? Meteorogically, this is completely bizarre. This storm apparently did not have real tropical characteristics and was extra-tropical.

5. Not only was its direction of spin opposite from a real hurricane
...but so was its thermal properties??

6. Wouldn't it have to spin clockwise?
Since it's in the Southern Hemisphere, it would have to be "backwards", wouldn't it?

7. It would have spun clockwise
being in the Southern Hemisphere. A hurricane in the Northern Hemisphere spins counter-clockwise.

3. Just listened
to the Univ of Wisc meteorologists on WPR.

for their part, they think it's a hurricane. Whether it's a first ever is debatable. They suspect there will be several very long reports on this thing within the next couple of weeks that will give a better understanding of the dynamics of this thing.

4. according to the first report

This storm *started* with a cold core, and then transformed into a hot-core storm, by sitting on top of some warm water for a few days.

Just whistling in the dark, whistling in the dark....

8. That makes more sense
That happens occasionally in the Northern Hemisphere early in the season then late in the season.

9. wow thanks for the update
I knew the Brazilians were saying the winds were not hurricane speed, and I was dying to learn more. I've been a victim of a tropical storm and it isn't pretty, no matter the cause. I hope we don't see more of these.
