Hybrid Car Demand Goes Into Overdrive
"Call it revenge of the nerds. Gas-guzzling muscle cars are being overtaken by unassuming little hybrids. And the Toyota Prius is leading the charge. For the first four months of the year, sales of the Prius are up 80 percent from last year, and April sales are more than 150 percent higher than a year ago.

Prius sales have been so brisk that it's difficult to buy one. Waiting lists at San Diego County Toyota dealerships range from 60 to 330 people. Many would-be Prius owners are having to wait as long as a year.

EDIT

No doubt record-high gas prices have something to do with hybrids' increasing popularity. In San Diego County, unleaded regular gas sold for an average of $2.27 per gallon Monday.

EDIT

Meanwhile, sales of low-mileage sport utility vehicles have dipped. In April, sales of the Hummer H2 were down 21 percent from the same month a year ago. Cadillac Escalade sales dropped by more than 17 percent, and sales of the lower-priced Ford Expedition plummeted 33 percent."

EDIT

1. I think with the new gas prices, they are actually worth it now...

Before when the prices were so low, the money you saved on gas didnt justify the extra cost of the car. But with the new high prices it crossed a line which made them economically reasonable. Probably a lot of small businesses buying them as company cars as well.

Good stuff.

4. With some, it's a political statement, too.
People do make the connection between war and gas prices, even if the media doesn't draw it for them.

I thought of getting a bumper sticker for my car which says "My car is my bumper sticker."

2. I live in Saint Louis, Missouri...
...which has historically been below the curve in gas prices. Yesterday, I paid $2/gallon at the pump for the first time in my life. What a shocker...

3. I have a Prius. What are gas prices these days?
I will have to fill up in the next day or two. Have they gone up from two weeks ago?

...non-SUV drivin bastige ;)

I want to print up bumper stickers that say, "My car is fuel efficient. Your SUV runs on the blood of US soldiers."
