UN takes Del Ponte off war crimes probe

The UN Security Council passed a resolution which effectively took away responsibility for investigating war crimes in Rwanda from chief UN prosecutor Carla del Ponte.

The resolution passed on Thursday separated responsibility for the investigation into war crimes in the central African state and the former Yugoslavia, which del Ponte has held for the past four years.

The Rwandan government had fought for del Ponte to be taken off the investigation. Her four-year mandate was to expire on September 14.

Rwanda had refused to co-operate with the investigation since the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda had said it would look into possible war crimes by members of the armed forces during the country's 1994 genocide.
