Still no liberation for Afghan women
The Taliban's fall was supposed to bring freedom for women. But for many, life is still a misery and, for one, jail is the safest place to be

Mina rests on the earth floor of a Kandahar jail. Now eight months pregnant by a man she says raped and tortured her for seven years, she is in the Afghan prison for fleeing the marital home.

She is 28 but wears the lined, sad face of an old woman. Wet eyes glimmering through her burqa, she rocks gently as she talks of her coming baby as a bleak and loathsome prospect.

"I was abducted," she says. "This man is not my husband. I have a family and I want to go back to them. But if my parents see I have a new baby, they may kill me."

I wonder why a reporter doesn't ask about Afghanistan when Junior talks about accomplishments in Iraq?

3. Unfortunately in tribal
Afghanistan that would be happening whether the Taliban were still in power or not. The good news is that there are women's clinic's in some of the northern (more progressive if you can call it that) areas, near Kabul. There are also a few more schools being opened to women and girls now that the Taliban are gone (supposedly). There are parts of that country that will never change from the traditional way and we in the west find that offensive but it is a fact of life for many in Afghanistan. I feel for Pres Karzhi, he has his hands full and not much support. Warlords weld the power. US presence in Afghanistan is doing some good, but it is definitely off the front page and seldom sees the light of day, plus it's in miniscule quantities. Not many GIs are dieing there (which is a good thing) compared to Iraq.
