Allies Say Brazil Government Lacks Coordination

BRASILIA, Brazil (Reuters) - Allies of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday accused his government of lacking direction after a big defeat in the Senate, which analysts said could upset planned economic reforms.

The Senate on Wednesday rejected a ban on bingo gambling parlors that was part of an anti-corruption drive the center-left government hoped would rebuild its image after an influence-peddling scandal that broke in February.

The Senate decision was seen as Lula's worst Congress defeat and it highlighted a growing need for the government to improve coordination in order to promote growth in Latin America's largest economy and pass much-needed reforms.
