India - Exit polls show gains for Gandhi
http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/05/11/india.poll/index.html

NEW DELHI, India -- Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's fractious coalition is scrambling to court new allies after exit polls show it has lost ground to the opposition party in marathon elections.

Results are expected Thursday, and the opposition Congress party -- headed by Italian-born Sonia Gandhi -- is projected to make solid gains.

The exit polls show Vajpayee's coalition failing to win enough seats to control parliament and form a stable government....

1. Good News
Hopefully another hardline government is going down. Rajiv Ghandi's widow would be a damn sight better than those BJP idiots.

3. i wouldnt say that....
the right wing nuts at BJP have been kept at bay so far thanks to the prime minister's attempts to nudge the BJP to a centrist platform- which means less talk of muslim perfidy against the nation and more talk about developing the nation.
if the BJP loses this election, expect the right wing nuts to blame the defeat on the attempts to dilute the hardline ideology and to push the BJP back to its old self- of engineering riots against muslims.
so, despite not liking the BJP, i am hoping the moderate members of the party will be vindicated. that india does not have room for right wing politics.

6. Vajpayee will lead the opposition...
...and he is one person I still like. He is the moderate face of BJP and has been quite successful in dragging BJP from extreme right to centrist positions in many areas. I wish him the best.

5. I couldn't agree more, ribofunk...
I was hoping for this. I now know
that the vote isn't always rigged in every country. Quite a good day
today is, in India and the rest of the world.

Right-wing nationalism is floundering! Countries and their voting
populations are returning to the tenets of sanity and progressive
liberalism once more. With what happened in Spain first, now India, I
have high hopes for both the UK & the US (although admittedly the most
cautious hopes in the US) to follow suit in the upcoming
elections in both countries.
