Citizens of the Dominican Republic prepared to head for the polls yesterday in a presidential election that pits incumbent Hipolito Mejia against his predecessor, Leonel Fernandez.

Allegations of fraud were flying even before voting began in the Caribbean state.

On Friday, Fernandez, candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), charged that some 420,000 voters had been eliminated from the voter rolls to favor the government.

However Luis Arias, head of the Central Election Board, said on Saturday that his workers had cross-checked their data with the master voter list and found no irregularities.
