I don't think people will "wake up" or that the criticism will make the "wheels come off," because I think people understood what was going on pretty well even before the election. I think people know that we're having much greater difficulty in Iraq then we'd expected. Our soldiers, and Iraqis, are dying, and there is a growing Iraqi resistance, especially in the Sunni Triangle. However, even knowing this, I think people still support the Iraq War - and all this was true before the election.
Again, before the election, conservatives witheld criticisms, as there was no point making the election more difficult for President Bush. They may have disagreed with him, but they disagreed with Kerry even more. Of course, the election is over now, so this is the time to try to influence those decisions.
Basically, I disagree with the underlying assumption of your question. I think that we, the country as a whole, understand the situation in Iraq pretty well already - no need to "wake up."
