Teachers want to be armed - SA

Besieged township teachers are demanding guns to protect themselves from criminals and delinquent pupils after a spate of robberies, assaults and hostage-taking of teachers.

Gang violence, murder and criminal elements have reduced schoolgrounds to a state of anarchy, leading teachers to propose that they come to work armed.

But the problem is not unique to township schools, as a Johannesburg weekend newspaper yesterday reported that a gang called The West was terrorising teachers and pupils at Northview High in Highlands North.

it looks like South Africa will decline into the same type of chaos found in much of the continent. No easy answers.
