UK “PM promises clampdown on knives”
PM promises clampdown on knives

Police in the UK's worst knife crime hotspots will be told to prosecute anyone caught with a blade, Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said.

"It is completely unacceptable to carry a knife or a gun. Where police have previously been cautioning people, there now has to be a presumption of prosecution."

* * * * * * * * * * * *

However, Camilla Batmanghelidjh, founder of the charity Kids Company, warned that the proposals would not address the underlying causes of knife crime - gang culture and the drug trade.

He also said he was concerned about violent computer games featuring knives.

Will the Brits ban violent computer games next and we should not forget books with violent tales such as David using a sling to kill Goliath?

4. Funny you should ask

Kitchen knife ban sought

* James Meikle
* The Guardian,
* Friday May 27 2005

This article appeared in the Guardian on Friday May 27 2005 . It was last updated at 02:12 on May 27 2005.

Accident and emergency doctors today call for the banning of long, sharp kitchen knives, arguing they account for at least half of all stabbings.

They say such knives slice through clothing and penetrate vital organs.

"Many assaults are impulsive, often triggered by alcohol or misuse of other drugs, and the long, pointed kitchen knife is an easily accessible, potentially lethal weapon, particularly in the domestic setting," say the doctors from the West Middlesex university hospital, London, in the British Medical Journal.

Knives "of less than 5cm <2ins> in length" or with blunt, round ends would meet culinary needs and be far less likely to result in fatalities.

8. Because let's remember how effective the UK's gun ban was at lowering homicides
God, I love this graph. Billbuckhead hasn't made a peep about UK gun control since I made it...

Remember, folks, UK "assault weapon" ban in 1989. Complete ownership ban, no grandfathered guns allowed.

Handgun ban in 1998. Complete ownership ban as well, no grandfathered guns allowed.

Full disclosure: that little spike in 2002 in the UK rate was when they put some 150 homicides over the past twenty or so years by one serial-killer doctor on the homicide table.

11. "Yoof" defiintion...
best definition I could find from Wiktionary:

YOOF countable and uncountable; plural yoofs)

1. (British slang) Youth (young person, young people or the state of being young).
2. (used as a modifier before a noun) Of or relating to youth or youths.
3. (used as a modifier before a noun) Intended for youths.from

If you live over there, it probably helps to have a sense of humor.

Sure glad we rebelled!
