The reporter asks the guy what made an AR15 "so powerful", and the guy answers, "And effective? The ammo."

Actually as long as the officers are well trained, I see no problem. A semi-auto rifle like the AR15 is much more accurate at medium to long range than a Glock 40 handgun. The round it fires is reasonably effective against a human target and the rifle has little recoil.

A hand gun is basically a close range self defense weapon. A rifle could be considered more of an offensive weapon. If I were a police officer in a firefight and had enough time to chose my weapon, I would feel better armed with a AR15 than any handgun. Because of the ease of use and the inherent accuracy of the rifle, I should be able to reduce the chances of a stray bullet injuring an innocent bystander.

Solitary criminals find handguns easier to conceal and therefore more useful for their chosen occupation. Gangs involved in turf warfare may chose rifles as their weapon of choice. Criminal gangs are a problem in Florida.

I should point out that some police agencies in Florida have access to REAL assault rifles that can fire full auto or semi auto. For example:

Seems that if he is so clueless, someone would question Timoney's qualifications as a Peace Officer. Somebody that comes to mind is the Commissioner that is hounding Timoney about the cars and stuff.
