Judge rules for Taser in cause-of-death decisions
"It is dangerously close to intimidation," says Jeff Jentzen, president of the National Association of Medical Examiners. "At this point, we adamantly reject the fact that people can be sued for medical opinions that they make."

Taser still faces lawsuits from family members of victims who claim the stun gun is deadly and the company has not done proper medical research. They allege police officers are using the weapon as a compliance tool against people who do not pose significant threats.

Medical examiners, who typically work for the county or state, are supposed to provide independent scientific analysis about the cause of someone's death. Their rulings are recognized by courts and the police as the official cause of death.

Taser advocates an alternative cause-of-death scenario called excited delirium. The condition, which is not recognized as a diagnosis in official medical manuals, is used to describe deaths of suspects who become so agitated by drugs, psychosis or poor health that their bodies shut down during struggles with police.

Tasers have been tested only on healthy test subjects, never on unhealthy subjects like pregnant women and people with heart conditions.

IMO it's just a matter of time before Taser Intl. loses a big case followed by a flood of civil law suits that force it close to bankruptcy.

1. We can hope, Jody.
However, I think torture is too ingrained in the American character for the Taser to be anything but central to the culture.

If the scenario you imagine came to pass, Congress would probably move to protect the makers of the portable torture device.

2. Not many less lethal options.
If they outlaw tasers, police involved shootings will go way up. Pepper spray, mace, etc. are just not effective against some people. Having said that they probably are overused and their use doesn't even generate a supervisor coming to a scene in some locales. I have good friends who are cops that seem to defuse situations that arise and I know other people, a few firemen in particular, that always cause situations to escalate. Gordan Graham told the LAPD that their policy of having 12 people doing background checks and 100 people doing internal affairs was backwards. If they had 100 people doing background checks they would only need a couple of guys in internal affairs. It is probably a fair point.
