Councilman preps ban on 'Jumbo Slice' sales
May 24, 2009 - 8:59am

WASHINGTON - Blaming single-slice pizza sales as part of the crime problem in Adams Morgan, a D.C. councilmember is proposing a ban of the popular late-night snack in Adams Morgan.
The crowded bar and nightclub scene on 18th street has had a recent spout of violence, including a shootout that killed a man, and injured two police officers.

1. I totally get that
We need to roll back to tamales from vender-carts.
That will stop the violence.

3. When pizza is outlawed, only outlaws will eat pizza.
Someone in D.C. needs to get a brain, and stifle that "OMG BAN SOMETHING!!!" reflex whenever someone identifies a problem that needs addressing.

4. Can we still make our own?
If not, I'll be up the holler building a pizza oven. There's money to be made in Pizza Prohibition.

20. By the time you're cold...
... the pizza will be, too, in which case it won't be worth having.

6. Pizza should not be banned, but...
it should be regulated. There is no reason any person should need more then plain cheese.

Don't give me the GOP/NRA/Pentavirate talking points about mushrooms. Only the military should have access to mushrooms.

The only reason someone would want peperoni is because they have a small penis.

REGULATE PIZZA NOW!!!

9. It's common knowledge which bars in this area are the focal point for the violence.
Edited on Tue May-26-09 08:47 AM by Tim01
This councilman is going way way out of his way to say something should be done without saying it has to do with hip hop bars.
It isn't the jazz bars or 80s night bars or the country bars. Hell, it isn't even the strip clubs. It is consistently the same bars.
Everybody knows it, and obviously, it is the fault of the "pizza".

10. How would banning pizza solve the problem with an unruly bar.
If the management can't ensure safety of the bar then yank their ABC license.
No booze = no bar = no fights.

Too easy. To waste taxpayer dollars banning and/or regulating pizza is just what I have come to expect from DC.
DC council couldn't lead their way out of a paper bag and they want more autonomy. Based on their track record it has been a miserable failure. Scrap the council and put them under direct control of Congress again.

12. That's only part of it
That part of DC is actually a great spot and has thriving nightlife. I only visit in the day time, however, as after the bars close it becomes a shooting gallery. During the summer, it is a regular Saturday night occurrence. The real problem is that over the past 10 years the area has become a nexus of two neighborhoods with competing black and illegal immigrant "gangs" (actually, they are more loose nit groups of thugs). These boys are not playing nice together. Quirky (white) Councilman Jim Graham (who has an FLMN sticker in his car) cannot alienate either his African American or Latino constituency--hence he goes after the pizza.

One thing I have learned in my transition from a pro-gun control Democrat to a pro-2A Democrat is that when local law enforcement/politicians scream for gun control, it is usually the sign of failed law enforcement. They don't have the more gun control argument option in DC. Hence, they go after the Pizza.

14. Ah, you are more familiar with this area than I am.
I've been in clubs more than once which are in the same building as the problem bars. After my club closes I walk past the police outside, lock my car doors, and get out of D.C. as fast as I can.
It's always the same club or clubs. I don't know if the problem people gravitate toward these particular clubs out of more or less chance, or if the club management sets things up in a way that attracts violent people.

Get rid of the pizza, it's for the children.

16. I've traveled to the East Coast on business a few times
I swear, those people roll up the sidewalks at 6pm. Visitors guide to not starving:

1. Look on a map, find three Universities in close proximity.
2. Drive around in the area between the three. You will eventually find an all-night pizzaria.
3...
4. Profit!

17. "reasonable" regs proposed: multiples allowed only with hairy fish
Edited on Tue May-26-09 06:35 PM by Tejas
In hammering out details of the proposed ban during a DC Council workshop, Graham alluded to the possibility that he would consider allowing multiple slices to be purchased in a 30-day period but they must be ordered with anchovies, no substitutes.

The Bar / club will lose it's liquor license if the police have to show up more than 3 or 4 times a year.
